2008 SPRING SPORT PLAYOFF PICTURE

Girls Soccer: With an 8-1-1 league record the Lady Falcons took the Sierra Valley Conference title by a whisker over the rival Ponderosa Bruins.  The Falcon's first Division playoff game will take place Friday, May 9 @ 3:30 p.m. on the CB campus against the McClatchy Lions who finished in third place in the Metro League.  Come out and cheer them on as the Falcons seek their third section title in the last five years. Update: The girls defeated the McClatchy Lions 2-0 on the CB campus and now advance to meet the Sierra Foothill League Champion Rocklin at Folsom High School on Wednesday, May 14 at 8:00 p.m. Come out to support this great team as they seek another section title banner.

Boys Golf: The Boys Golf team won their second consecutive Sierra Valley Conference tournament title in finishing off an impressive undefeated league season.  The Falcons  then marched on to the Section Division II title at Wildhorse Golf Course in Davis on     May 5, defeating Oak Ridge H.S. by four shots and Rocklin by 13.  CB was led in victory by Grant Rappleye's scorching eight-under-par 64!  The win moves the Falcons into the Masters Tournament at Stevinson Ranch Golf Course on May 13 where they will defend their 2007 crown.

Baseball: Heading into the final week of the regular season the Falcons sit in fourth place with only three teams advancing to the playoffs.  In the last week, the Falcons dug a hole for themselves by dropping an extra-inning thriller to Galt 5-3 at home and seeing Oak Ridge come from behind to prevail 12-11. At 13-12 overall and 6-7 in league, the Falcons need to sweep first-place Ponderosa in their final two games (CB defeated Ponderosa in their first meeting) and see an Oak Ridge sweep over Union Mine and a Cordova sweep over Galt to make the Division II playoffs.  Update: The boys were eliminated from the playoff chase in the final week of their season as Ponderosa, Union Mine & Galt advance to the Division II playoffs beginning May 14 at Sac City College.

Rugby: The Varsity team took an impressive 13-1 record into the playoffs and defeated their first round opponent, Cardinal Newman, on the road in Santa Rosa by a score of 24-15.  But a series of injuries finally caught up to the Falcons as they dropped their second- round playoff game on May 3 to Jesuit.  Stay tuned for further details of the ruggers post-season play.  Update:

Swimming & Diving: CB is sending an impressive twenty-two swimmers on to the section trials May 8 and 9 at Tokay H.S.  In addition, freshman diver Robin Davis finished in 7th place in the Frosh/Soph section finals.

Track: The boys track team enters the Sierra Valley Conference League Trials (May 7 and 9 at Cordova H.S.) in second place with the conference title on the line. The section trials follow on May 14 & 16 @ Bella Vista H.S. with the Masters Trials on May 22 & 23.

FALCONS 2007-08 WINTER SPORT UPDATE & PLAYOFF PICTURE

Girls Basketball:  The Varsity Lady Falcons finished the regular season with a 23-4 overall record while going 7-3 in the powerhouse Sierra Valley Conference, good for second place tie with Ponderosa H.S.  CB's 13-1 preseason record included championships at the Forest Lake, Loretto and Lincoln tournaments.  The team capped off their regular season with a stunning 58-48 victory over Oak Ridge to take the crown at the Sierra Valley Conference tournament.  That win assured the Lady Falcons the #1 seed in the San Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs and secured for them home court advantage in the first two rounds.  The Lady Falcons (ranked #9 in all divisions in the last Sacramento Bee poll) cruised to a first round playoff victory Tuesday night at home over #16 seed North Hills Christian, 80-17.  The Falcons were led by Brittany Woodard's 19 and Katie Hoekman's 18. In their round two game CB rolled past #8 seed West Campus by a score of 66-49d play, led by Woodard with 20 and Destiny Bouldin with 17.  In the Div. IV semi-finals at Tokay against Linden H.S. (#5 seed), the Lady Falcons got out of the gate slowly but stormed back for the win by a score of 79-68.  CB was led by Brittany Woodard (27 points/8 rebounds) and Megan Padilla (20 points/6assists).

The Lady Falcons defeated Modesto Christian on Saturday, March 1 at Arco Arena to claim the first-ever Christian Brothers Women's Division IV Section Basketball Title. The final score in this nail-biter was 60-57.

SENIOR BRITTANY WOODARD

2008 McDONALD'S ALL-AMERICAN NOMINEE

2/13/08 - Brittany Woodard receives her

2008 McDonald's All American High School Basketball Award

Each year McDonald's selects 2,500 male and female seniors from across the United States as nominees for the 48 slots, 24 boys and 24 girls, on the McDonald's All-American team.  Those final 48 participate in the McDonald's All-American game to be played this year at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on March 26, 2008.  Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Labron James are among the basketball luminaries who have participated in the McDonald's High School All-American Game.  This year, CB's own Brittany Woodard has received one of these rare McDonald's All-American nominations and was presented with her award just before tip-off at Wednesday night's home Sierra Conference Tournament game against Union Mine.  The award is one of many received by Brittany as she caps a spectacular four-year basketball and volleyball career at Christian Brothers by leading the Falcons into the Division IV Basketball Playoffs next week as the number one seed in the San Joaquin Section.  Next year, Brittany will be attending the University of Nevada Reno on a basketball and volleyball scholarship.  Congratulations to Brittany and her family on her tremendous accomplishments and this wonderful honor.

Boys Basketball:  The Christian Brothers Varsity finished the regular season 15-11 overall and 4-6 in the Sierra Valley Conference where four of the six teams entered the playoffs in three different divisions of play.  CB's successful 8-4 preseason record included a tournament championship at Marysville where they defended their crown from last year. However, the Falcons saved their best for last, playing their most complete game of the season in defeating the Cordova Lancers 65-59 Friday night at Ponderosa H.S. to take third place in the Sierra Valley Conference regular season-ending tournament.  The win over Cordova propelled the Falcons up the C.I.F. power ratings to the #12 seed in the San Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs.  The Falcons traveled to Grass Valley Wednesday night and pulled off the upset, defeating #5 seed Bear River 59-50 on the Bruins home court.  CB was led by Sterling Arterberry (25 pts.), Jason Henderson (14 pts.) and Nick Maionchi (10 pts.)  In round two the Falcon road warriors did it again, taking on San Juan on their home floor and handing the #4 seed Spartans only their 5th loss of the year, posting a thrilling 52-50 victory.  The Falcons were led by seniors Jason Henderson (21 pts.) and Danny Bird (tenacious on the boards) with junior Sterling Arterberry adding 15 points. It was Henderson's driving, acrobatic bucket with under ten seconds remaining that gave the Falcons their second upset road victory of the week.  The win took CB, a team peeking at just the right time of year, into a Div. IV semi-final match-up at Tokay H.S. on Wednesday, February 27 at 5:30 p.m. against #1 seed Colfax.   In that semi-final match-up against the #1 seed from Colfax, CB got out to a quick start and an early lead.  Despite an uncharacteristic number of turnovers, the Falcons trailed Colfax by only one (26-25) at halftime.  CB trailed by only three with two minutes left in the third quarter but at that point the Colfax defense stiffened and the Falcons went cold from the floor, ultimately falling 66-49 in their season finale, one game short of the section title game at Arco.  Nonetheless, it was a solid season capped by a great playoff run by the young (only 3 seniors) CB squad.  Congratulations to the players and coaches!

Wrestling: The Falcon wrestlers have put the miles on this season while enjoying a great deal of success.  Their preseason and non-league schedule has seen them traveling to Novato, Casa Roble (5 medals), Bishop Amat in Southern California (an impressive 10th place finish out of 26 major programs in attendance), American River, Granada in Livermore (19th place finish out of 38 teams), and Rosemont (an outstanding third place finish out of the 17 squads participating).  In the San Joaquin section Division II tournament Christian Brother's Jameson Cordeiro (103 weight group), Jason Howard (130 weight group), and Ryan Lutz (160 weight group) were all 4'th place finishers and Dylan Orr (215 weight group) was 6'th coming up just one spot short of advancing.  As a result, Jameson, Jason and Ryan all qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Wrestling Tournament which will be held at the Spanos Center on the University of the Pacific campus on Thursday, February 21 and Friday, February 22. This is the first time in over a decade that the Falcons have had 3 wrestlers advance this far in post-regular season wrestling.

FALCONS 2007 FALL SPORT PLAYOFF PICTURE

Here's the scoop in a nutshell.

Girls Volleyball: The Falcons first D IV playoff match is against Mariposa on Tuesday, November 6 @ 7:00 p.m. at CB's Limeberger Gymnasium.  The Falcons enter the post-season as the #6 seed in D IV (ranked #10 in the Sacramento area among all divisions).    Plan on being there as the Lady Falcons start their drive to become back-to-back section champs - stay tuned for details.

Division II Playoff Updates: The Falcons were victorious Tuesday night at home over Mariposa (25-11 25-9 26-28 25-6) to begin their Division IV section title defense.

CB defeated Capitol Athletic League Champions Loretto Thursday night on the road.  The 2d round win was a convincing one, 3-0 (25-22 25-16 27-25).  The Falcons continue their Div. IV Title defense next Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Christian Brothers @ 7:00 p.m. against the #7 seed Hilmar (29-3 overall; 14-1 champions of the Western League).

On Tuesday night, November 13, the Falcons were once again victorious. The third-round win over Hilmar at home was another convincing one, 3-0 (25-15 25-21 25-16), taking the Falcons back to the Div. IV section title game. The girls will defend  their section crown against the Trans Valley League champs Ripon Indians (34-7-1 overall, 14-1 in league) at U.C. Davis, Thursday, November 15 @ 6:00 p.m.  CB defeated Ripon earlier this season as well as in last year's section title game.  Come out and cheer this great team on as they attempt to become back-to-back-to-back section champs! (posted 11-5-07)
(KBC Sports, the official webcaster of the Sac-Joaquin Section, will webcast the finals of the Sac-Joaquin Section volleyball championships at UC Davis on Thursday, November 15.   http://kbcsports.com/schedule.asp)

2007 Division IV Section Champions!

On Thursday night the Falcons returned to U.C. Davis, site of their 2005 and 2006 section championship wins . . . and did it again!  Yes, CB became the back-to-back-to-back Division IV section champions by defeating the #1 seed from Ripon 3-0 (27-25 27-25 25-16). The Falcon faithful were on the edge of their seats throughout the early going and when Ripon took a 24-19 lead in the first game it looked like the fans were in for a long night. However, the Falcons' suddenly got hot and took 8 of the last nine points to win 27-25.  Ripon was not to go down without a fight, having lost the last three matches between the teams including last year's section final. In the second game Ripon took the Falcons down to the wire before CB prevailed, once again by a score of 27-25.  In the third game the CB over-powered Ripon, 25-16.  Kayla Neto played a spectacular all-round game in the championship match with Brittany Woodard, Erika Cuevas and Katie Hoekman contributing with a number of big kills and blocks and Whitney Swain, Kelly Pelz and Samantha Moser providing a steadying influence.

With the section three-peat complete the Falcons move on to the Northern California championships, hosting a game at home Tuesday night, November 20 @ 7:00 p.m. against North Coast Section runner-up, Justin Siena (24-9 overall) of Napa.  Come out and cheer the record-breaking CB team on in their quest to return to the Division IV state title game.

In front of a large home crowd the Falcons continued on their march to another appearance in the Division IV State title game, defeating visiting Justin-Siena 3-0 (25-13 25-22 25-14).  CB was in control throughout the match with Erika Cuevas (7 kills), Katie Hoekman (6 blocks, 5 kills), Kayla Neto (8 kills, 2 blocks, 6 digs & 4 aces), Brittany Woodward (11 kills, 2 blocks & 16 digs), dominating up front with one devastating kill after another.  With the victory, the Falcons advance to the NorCal semi-finals against #1 seed Menlo (30-9) in Atherton Saturday, November 27 @ 7:00 p.m.  This will be a rematch with Menlo having squeaked out a 3-2 victory over the Falcons in a September tournament game.  However, CB is a much stronger and more experienced team now and only Menlo stands in the way of a return to the Northern California Championship game.  Many a Falcon fan will hit the road to be there - join them!

The beat goes on as the Lady Falcons marched on to their second straight appearance in the Division IV Northern California title game, defeating #1 seed Menlo 3-1 (25-23 15-25 25-16 25-20) Saturday night in Atherton.  CB will play for the Norcal championship Tuesday, November 27 at 7:00 p.m. @ Christian Brothers Limeberger Gymnasium against #2 seed Harker School (27-4) of San Jose, the Central Coast Section runner-up. A win would put this record-breaking Falcon squad back into the Div. IV State title game on Saturday at San Jose State.  CB Boosters are urged to pack the gym and give the Falcons a big home court advantage with the Norcal Championship at stake.

The Falcons march toward back-to-back Division IV Norcal Titles was derailed Tuesday night before a packed house at Limeberger Gymnasium, with Harker School of San Jose prevailing 3-1.  The Falcons didn't appear comfortable early, having lost key Junior Kayla Neto to a severely sprained ankle at practice just the night before the Norcal Final.  With Harker coming out of the gate fast with a series of service aces and a power attack, the Falcons were reeling early losing the first two games.  But the defending Norcal champions gathered themselves and rallied for a third game victory.  CB jumped out to an early lead in the fourth game and the tide appeared to have turned.  But down the stretch Harker was just too much to handle for the Falcons.  CB was led by senior captain Brittany Woodard in her final volleyball game as a Falcon (15 kills & 3 blocks), Erika Cuevas (9 kills) and Katie Hoekman (6 kills & 3 blocks). The incredible run for this excellent CB team has ended - a third consecutive section title in the bank and the 2007 Div. IV runner-ups.  Quite a season indeed.  All CB Boosters are very proud of this team for its tremendous accomplishments and the heart they showed throughout the year.  Congratulations to all the players and coaches!

Football: The Falcons return to the playoffs for the second time in the last three years after a decade-long drought of playoff appearances.  CB takes on the Metro league champion Burbank Titans (8-2 overall, 5-0 in league) on Friday night, November 16 at Hughes Stadium.  Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.  In the other first round match-ups, Granite Bay (SFL # 1) is at home against Sacramento High (Metro #3), Ponderosa (SVC #1) hosts Grant (Metro #2) and Del Oro (SFL #2) is at home against Oak Ridge (SVC #2)All of these games will be played Friday night, November 16.  Plan on being at Hughes Stadium Friday night to help the Falcons bring home a playoff victory for the first time in many years!

Division II Playoff Updates: The Falcons dropped a heart-breaker Friday night at Hughes Stadium, falling to Metro League Champs Burbank, 22-20.  The loss ended the season for CB following their return to play-off competition for the 2nd time in the last three years.  See the football team page for more details.

Boys Soccer: The Falcons surged in the second half to finish 6-3-1 in league, good for third place in the SVC and a playoff birth.  The boys play Metro League champion Burbank (13-4-3 overall and 7-1-2 in league) in their first-round match on Friday at 3:00 at Burbank.

Division II Playoff Updates:  The CB Falcons won their first playoff game by defeating Burbank 2-1.  Ruben Montoya and Bryan Perrin each scored goals in the victory!

The Falcons season ended Wednesday night as they came up just short, falling to Rocklin 1-0 in the Div. II Section semi-final match.  It was a great second half run by the Falcons.  Congratulations to all the players and coaches on a fine season.

Girls Tennis: Ashley Turpin and Jackie Ruiz, the #1 and #2 singles players this year in the SVC, are two of three SVC players moving on to the 16-player D II girls individual tennis tournament presented by Farmers Insurance on November 8 & 9 at the Rancho Cortez Swim and Tennis Club in Yuba City.  The Lady Falcons finished the league season at 9-4 in 3rd place, just missing the team play-offs.

Division II Playoff Updates:  In the D II girls individual tennis tournament, CB's Ashley Turpin was defeated by Heather Davidson from Rocklin, while Jackie Ruiz lost to the No. 8 overall seed to end a very successful season by both Falcon players.  Congratulations girls on a tremendous year.

Girls Golf: Falcons Megan Padilla and Bianca Gayton qualified as individuals for the D II playoffs at Sunset Whitney Country Club on October 22.  Out of 56 girls competing, Megan missed advancing to the Masters tournament by only 5 strokes and Bianca fell 16 shots short.  They finished 3rd and 10th individually among those players not playing in the team competition.

Water polo:  The boys missed the playoffs but had one of their most successful seasons in recent memory, finishing at 14-10 overall and 4-4 in league.  The girls also did not advance to post-season play but were competitive all year long.

EYE ON THE ALUMNI

Calling all alumni! On each of the individual team sites there is a column listing Christian Brothers graduates who have gone on to compete in their sports in the college, semi-pro or professional ranks.  The column lists the player, their year of graduation and where they played after leaving CB.  Christian Brothers High School has a rich and storied athletic history. We know that there are many athletes over the decades who have followed up their high school careers by playing in college and even professionally. We are in the process of building each of these sports team history sites. While we have gathered some information, we need your help to make these lists complete and accurate.  So, if you know of any CB graduate who continued to pursue their athletic dreams in any sport at the next level, email us their information through the "contact us" box below or by sending the information to jvvine@citlink.net    With your help we can proudly display the athletic achievements and tradition that helps make Christian Brothers High School the very special Sacramento institution that it is.  Thank you and GO FALCONS!

Welcome to CBHS Boosters Club and our New Website

The CB Boosters Club would like to extend an invitation for you and your family to become members and active volunteers for the Booster Club. Once fully constructed, here on our new website you will be able to follow the progress of all Christian Brothers athletic teams including game results at all levels, learn about our great coaches, volunteer to work at athletic events, buy Spirit wear and receive team announcements. In addition, above you will find links to the highschoolsportscalendar.net (listing the complete and up to the minute CB sports calendar), as well as the Maxpreps and CIF San Joaquin Section websites. We hope that your son or daughter will be interested in a school sport at Christian Brothers High School as a spectator, super-star or somewhere in between. For all students, lessons are learned on and off the field and we welcome their enthusiasm and your support of that endeavor. The purpose is of the organization is to provide volunteer support for athletic programs, as well as financial support for educational, visual and performing arts, and social programs. Through the generous support of the Booster Club, the money raised in 2007-2008 will benefit all students helping them to become Lasallian ambassadors.

School Spirit. Some of the greatest moments we have to look back on as parents are those of our high school years. Pep-rallies; football games; long team bus rides; the celebration and the tears. Consider the crowd in the bleachers and how important their cheer is to the drive behind all student athletes. What would a sporting event be without a cheering crowd? All these moments eventually bonded us with lifelong friendships and great memories. As parents, we want the same sense of achievement, pride and fellowship for our children.

The tradition continues. The Booster Club relies on volunteers to fulfill its mission of supporting the excellent athletic programs at Christian Brothers High School. While we all take pride in the accomplishments of our many gifted athletes and coaches, the true emphasis of the athletic department is on making high school athletics available to all who wish to participate. The 2006-07 athletic budget of more than $600,000 makes it among the highest in the City, thus making available to all students a much needed outlet for social interaction, leadership development and team building. Each year, Boosters, through its fund raising efforts, is relied on to provide approximately 20% of the athletic budget.

Please help us continue the tradition. If you are a parent of a current CB athlete then you already understand the importance of the Booster Club. For new CB parents, your participation is essential to the continuation of the CB sport program and its many related functions. Whatever your strength or talent, we have a place for you. The Booster Club sponsors the snack shack at home games; sells CBHS Spirit Wear (dress code ready!) available at most home games and special events; traditional events including the Red & Blue Scrimmage in late August and the Spring Sports Bar-B-Que Event. You won’t want to miss any of these experiences, so mark them on your school calendars.

I encourage you to become a member of the Booster Club. A Boosters’ membership quickly pays for itself. The benefits include admission to home athletic events, and the knowledge that you are helping the athletic program that benefits our students in leadership development and team building. You are invited to join us for the Booster Club board meetings which are generally held on the evening of the first Monday of each month. The meetings are open to all parents. Click HERE for a membership application to be completed at your earliest convenience. Please feel free to make a photocopy for any other friends or relatives interested in joining.

If you have any questions, please call.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT

To establish an interscholastic athletic department that enhances the Lasallian educational process of our students. Through participation in athletics, student-athletes will have the opportunity to develop physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. They will recognize the presence of God in oneself and in others during competition. Athletics provide the opportunity for the student-athlete to exhibit a progression of physical skills and knowledge of a particular sport, enabling him/her to apply these skills and knowledge to new situations in a variety of learning formats. Student-athletes, coaches, and parents are called upon to work together in a true spirit of sportsmanship to assist in creating an environment in which those Lasallian values can be revealed, tested, and proven relevant both to participants and the entire school community. Every member of our community seek to encourage, instill , and foster such growth and development in all student-athletes.

The Director of Athletics leads the sports program, assisted by the Assistant Athletic Director. The entire student body is encouraged to take a genuine interest in the athletic program and contribute to our effort to strive for excellence. Students are expected to manifest a spirit of good sportsmanship and cooperation with officials and with the administration, coaches, faculty members and students from other schools.

As a member of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section, Christian Brothers High School diligently enforces all CIF rules. In addition, the Athletic Department has several policies unique to our mission:

Athletes absent from school are not eligible to participate in either practice or games unless approved by the Dean of Students.

All athletes will travel to games using school-arranged transportation.

All athletes traveling by school-provided transportation must return via school transportation from an event unless the parent has made arrangements with the Athletic Director prior to the event.

Every student wishing to participate in a sport must have a 'Consent and Release Form' turned into the coach.

Student-athletes are responsible for all equipment issued to them. Athletes will be held financially responsible for damaged, lost or stolen equipment.

Student-athletes may participate in off-season programs. Such participation may not be made mandatory.

Student-athletes' participation in club sports while in season at CBHS, will be at the discretion of each head coach.

GO FALCONS!
